Zinc is found in high levels in the iris of the eye and is needed for the immune system to function optimally. Zinc is part of the carbohydrate and protein metabolism. The body's need for zinc increases in pregnant and lactating mares and during hard work. Zinc deficiency has been shown to cause hoof damage, hair loss and skin problems on the legs and head. The risk of overdosing zinc on horses is small, but excess can inhibit the uptake of copper.
