Magnesium is one of the body's most important minerals, it is needed for the function of many enzymes and is important for maintaining good muscle and nerve function, as well as for the heart and vessels. About 60% of the body's magnesium is found in the skeleton and is important for skeletal development. Magnesium interacts with calcium and phosphorus.

The daily loss of magnesium via feces and urine is about 6 mg / kg body weight, which must be covered by the maintenance feed. However, magnesium cannot be stored in the body and must therefore be supplied continuously with the feed. It has been shown that both humans and horses often suffer from magnesium deficiency.

One of the deficiency symptoms in horses is nervousness, ie. "Look" and tension. In the case of magnesium deficiency, the body can not handle the substances released during stress or fear and this becomes clear through an increased tendency to react to events in the environment.

The reason for the increasing lack of magnesium we see today, is depleted soils but may also be due to the balance in the feed between calcium and magnesium is wrong. The ratio should be 5: 2 between calcium and magnesium.
